Kazan’s film, based on the life of his uncle, was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
Stavros, a young Greek man living in under Turkish oppression in the Ottoman Empire,
longs to travel to America. He travels to Constantinople, enduring difficulties
that lead to the loss of all his family's funds from their rug business.
Rejecting any possibility for money, work or marriage that doesn't involve sailing to America,
he defiantly hangs on to the dream, but his extreme determination may cost him his life.
The film deals briefly with the 1895 Hamidian massacres of the Armenians.
