Ohanessian Chair Lecture

The United States and the Armenian Genocide:

History, Memory, Politics

with Julien Zarifian (Université de Poitiers)

Sunday, April 27

St. Sahag Armenian Church

12:30 PM

Julien Zarifian reports core findings from his recent book, exploring which geopolitical and institutional factors led the US to adopt a policy of genocide non-recognition, through Republican and Democratic administrations alike. He speaks to the role of activists from the US Armenian diaspora and their allies, politicians worried about alienating NATO ally Turkey, and the widespread American reluctance to directly confront horrors of the past. He presents evidence from congressional records, rare newspapers, and interviews with lobbyists and decision-makers.

Presented by the Charlotte and Arsham Ohanessian Chair and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies
